Work together to achieve development goal: Minister

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan has urged the workers to work together to help Bangladesh achieve the status of a middle-income country by 2021.

He was addressing a rally in Dhaka organised by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to mark the May Day.

Several wings of trade union affiliated with the ruling party participated in the rally on Sunday.

“You (workers) have to be very careful about terrorist and militant activities and raise voices to stop it,” Shahjahan Khan said, urging them to help achieve Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina`s vision of development.

State Minister for Labour Md Mujibul Haque Chunnu said, “The incumbent government is worker-friendly and has taken a lot of initiatives, including amending the Labour Act and (setting up) workers welfare fund, to ensure their rights.”

In the amended Labour Act 2013, the government has kept a provision of depositing 0.03% of export value to the workers’ welfare fund to ensure proper compensation and their welfare in case of untoward incidents.

The owners of export-oriented garment industries will contribute 0.03% of export value to the workers’ welfare fund and of which, 50% will be kept for the welfare fund and 50% for tackling troubled situations.

As per the current export value, owners’ contribution to the welfare fund would be about Tk70 crore, which would be spent for workers welfare, Mujibul said.

“If a son or daughter of any worker study in the public university, the student will get a donation of Tk3 lakh from the fund to bear educational expenses,” the state minister said.

As a member of ILO, Bangladesh is closely working with the organisation to ensure labour rights. Through the enactment of rules of Bangladesh Labour Act 2013, the government has made the process of trade union registration easy, he added.

Jatiya Sramik League President Sukur Mahmud urged the government to implement ILO convention to allow workers practice freedom association in the factories.

রোহিঙ্গা নির্যাতনের প্রতিবাদ ড্যাফোডিল শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীদের

মিয়ানমারে রোহিঙ্গাদের হত্যা, নির্যাতনের প্রতিবাদে মানববন্ধন করেছেন ড্যাফোডিল ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুলের শিক্ষক ও শিক্ষার্থীরা। বৃহস্পতিবার দুপুরে স্কুলের বিপরীতে সোবহানবাগে এ মানববন্ধন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। মানববন্ধন শেষে এক আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে স্কুলের শিক্ষকরা বলেন, ধর্ম যার যার, রাষ্ট্র সবার। শুধু ধর্মকে ব্যবহার করে রোহিঙ্গাদের ওপর ইতিহাসের বর্বরোচিত হামলা করে যাচ্ছে মিয়ানমারের সরকারি বাহিনী। এ হামলা থেকে রোহিঙ্গা শিশুরাও রেহাই পাচ্ছে না; যার কারণে তারা নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ের খোঁজে বাংলাদেশে চলে আসছে। বক্তারা বলেন, মিয়ানমারের রাখাইন প্রদেশে যা ঘটছে, তা মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধ। ইতোমধ্যে বাংলাদেশসহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ বর্বরোচিত এ হামলার নিন্দা ও তা বন্ধের আহ্বান জানিয়েছে। এতে বক্তব্য রাখেন, স্কুলের অধ্যক্ষ শাহানা খান, উপদেষ্টা ড. মাহমুদুল হাসান, সিনিয়র ভাইস প্রিন্সিপ্যাল রহিমা মির্জা রোজিমেরি প্রমুখ। এছাড়া দ্রুত এ হামলা বন্ধ করে বাংলাদেশে আসা রোহিঙ্গাদের ফেরত নেওয়ারও দাবি জানান বক্তারা।
