SIM re-registration deadline now May 31

State Minister for Post and Telecommunications Tarana Halim declared that biometric SIM re-registration deadline has been extended till May 31.

The minister came up with the declaration at a meeting held at the conference centre of Bangladesh Tele-communication Regularity Commission (BTRC) on Saturday afternoon.

Tarana Halim further said, "The unregistered SIMs will be permanently closed after 12:00am on May 31 and the mobile operators won`t be able to sell those SIMs for next fifteen months."

Earlier on Thursday, the minister said, "April 30 is the final day of biometric SIM re-registration."

According to Tarana, 83.8 million of 130 million SIM cards were re-registered biometrically by Thursday morning while at least 10 million subscribers have allegedly failed to re-register as their fingerprints did not match.

On Friday, subscribers sweated it out at the biometric re-registration centres under a blistering sun in a rainless summer. Many of them alleged they could not re-register after waiting for hours on end.

Met office forecasts heavy rainfall likely

Due to active monsoon heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at  places over Chittagong, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions in 24 hours as of 10am  tomorrow due to fairly active monsoon over the country.  "Due to heavy to very heavy rainfall landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong  and Sylhet divisions," Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) release said here today. Besides "Rain or thunder showers temporary southerly or south easterly gusty or squally wind speed  4 -60 kilometers per hour (kph) is likely to occur over the regions of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Pabna, Bogra,  Tangail Mymensingh, Sylhet, Jessore, Kushtia, Dhaka, Faridpur, Madaripur, Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali,  Noakhali Comilla, Chittagong and Cox's Bazar wherein riverports shall hoist cautionary signal number  one till 6pm today.

রোহিঙ্গা নির্যাতনের প্রতিবাদ ড্যাফোডিল শিক্ষক-শিক্ষার্থীদের

মিয়ানমারে রোহিঙ্গাদের হত্যা, নির্যাতনের প্রতিবাদে মানববন্ধন করেছেন ড্যাফোডিল ইন্টারন্যাশনাল স্কুলের শিক্ষক ও শিক্ষার্থীরা। বৃহস্পতিবার দুপুরে স্কুলের বিপরীতে সোবহানবাগে এ মানববন্ধন অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। মানববন্ধন শেষে এক আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। আলোচনায় অংশ নিয়ে স্কুলের শিক্ষকরা বলেন, ধর্ম যার যার, রাষ্ট্র সবার। শুধু ধর্মকে ব্যবহার করে রোহিঙ্গাদের ওপর ইতিহাসের বর্বরোচিত হামলা করে যাচ্ছে মিয়ানমারের সরকারি বাহিনী। এ হামলা থেকে রোহিঙ্গা শিশুরাও রেহাই পাচ্ছে না; যার কারণে তারা নিরাপদ আশ্রয়ের খোঁজে বাংলাদেশে চলে আসছে। বক্তারা বলেন, মিয়ানমারের রাখাইন প্রদেশে যা ঘটছে, তা মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধ। ইতোমধ্যে বাংলাদেশসহ বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ বর্বরোচিত এ হামলার নিন্দা ও তা বন্ধের আহ্বান জানিয়েছে। এতে বক্তব্য রাখেন, স্কুলের অধ্যক্ষ শাহানা খান, উপদেষ্টা ড. মাহমুদুল হাসান, সিনিয়র ভাইস প্রিন্সিপ্যাল রহিমা মির্জা রোজিমেরি প্রমুখ। এছাড়া দ্রুত এ হামলা বন্ধ করে বাংলাদেশে আসা রোহিঙ্গাদের ফেরত নেওয়ারও দাবি জানান বক্তারা।
