Trump, Clinton on the attack as US race narrows

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton launched bitter attacks on each other’s character on Tuesday as a new poll suggested the White House race has tightened in the final week. Trump stormed into Democratic territory in Wisconsin to try to use suspicion generated by an FBI probe into Clinton’s emails to open an unlikely path to victory on 8 November. But, with political tension spilling over into financial markets, 69-year-old Clinton was determined not to lose her advantage, firing up Florida crowds with attacks on Trump’s attitude to women. Polling forecasts suggest the 70-year-old Republican property mogul faces a battle to win enough states to secure an electoral college victory over his Democratic rival. But he received a boost Tuesday when an ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll showed him leading Clinton by 46 to 45 percent. He boasted about the new numbers as he addressed a raucous crowd—chanting ‘Lock her up!’ and ‘Drain the swamp!’—in Eau Claire, Wis...

US issues travel advisory for India amid fears of IS attacks

The US embassy in New Delhi issued a security message to American citizens in India on Tuesday to be vigilant following reports that Islamic State may be planning to attack targets there. “Recent Indian media reports indicate ISIL’s (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) desire to attack targets in India,” the advisory said, warning of an increased threat to places frequented by Westerners such as religious sites, markets and festival venues. ISIL is an acronym for the jihadist organisation, which has seized territory in Iraq and Syria. “All US citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness,” the advisory said. Officials from the National Investigation Agency, India’s counter-terrorism unit, has been quoted as saying that an Indian man arrested last month in Tamil Nadu and charged with terrorism offences had been an active member of Islamic State in Iraq. US issues travel advisory f...

Miraz to get house as gift from Prime Minister

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has taken initiatives forconstruction of a residential house for the family of Bangladesh’s “wonder boy” cricketer all-rounder Mehedi Hasan Miraz. “Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has already directed the authorities concerned for construction of the house, and accordingly her principal secretary Md Abul Kalam Azad conveyed the directives to the deputy commissioner of Khulna,” PM’s deputy press secretary Ashraful Alam Khokan told media today. Ashraful Alam said local administration would take necessary steps for construction of the house for Miraz’s family after finding out a suitable place. Miraz, Bangladesh’s latest cricket sensation, became the toast of a nation with his 12 wickets in the first Test victory over England. The 19-year-old off spinner from Khulna played the key role in levelling the just-concluded two-match Rocket Test Series against the strong English side. Son of a poor taxi driver, Miraz took 19 English wickets in t...

India tries to hasten U.S. defense deals

India is trying to hasten a deal with the United States to buy Predator drone aircraft for military surveillance, one of several defence and nuclear projects the two sides are pursuing in the final months of the Obama administration. India’s request for 22 Predator Guardian drones made in June is in an advanced stage of negotiations. The two sides hope to make enough progress so only administrative tasks remain by the time President Barack Obama leaves office, government officials in New Delhi said. “It is progressing well. The aim is to complete the main process in the next few months,” said one of the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi has built personal ties with president Barack Obama, whose signature foreign policy move has been a strategic pivot to Asia from the Middle East. The United States has dislodged Russia as the top arms supplier to India. New Delhi is also on the cusp of sealing a US nuclear reactor deal w...

India arrests six suspected of plotting Islamic State attacks

Indian police have arrested six members of an Islamic State-inspired group suspected of plotting attacks on key figures and public places during the Hindu festival of Diwali, the national counter-terrorism agency said on Monday. Islamic State has struggled to win over many recruits in India, which is home to the world's third-largest Muslim population. But over the past year or so, the National Investigation Agency has found small groups of people in the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu who have either travelled to Syria to join the militant Sunni group or planned attacks inside India. On Sunday, the NIA picked up six men while they were in a meeting in a hilltop shrine in Kerala and said they were gathering explosives and other material to mount attacks in southern India during Diwali later this month. ‘During the searches, incriminating material including electronic devices have been seized from their possession and search of their premises,’ the agency said in a...

Amitabh Bachchan's Pink gets U/A certificate with just four cuts

Looks like the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Pink, a film that aims to bring awareness about crimes against women, is already changing minds - even before its release. The Central Board of Film Certification has reportedly demanded just “four verbal cuts” in the movie for it to receive a U/A certificate. These four verbal cuts are: ‘Phaad de unki’, ‘Ra***’, ‘Bi***’ and ‘Sa***’, a DNA report claimed. The film’s “commitment to projecting the urban Indian woman’s predicament in a patriarchal society” impressed the board. “The CBFC has always been empathetic to my films, right from Vicky Donor, which was about sperm donation. They have always understood the relevance of my film’s subject,” the report quoted Shoojit Sircar as saying. Sircar has produced the film. CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalai told DNA, “Akira and Pink are dark powerful films with hard-hitting content. Normally, they would be granted ‘Adult’ certificates. But we’ve given them ‘UA’ certificates because we at the CBFC feel pre-ad...

Kangana: Actors are just face of the brand

At a time when the government is mulling over a law that punishes celebrities for misleading advertisements, actress Kangana Ranaut feels it is wrong to hold stars liable for brand endorsements. She says actors are just the face of the brand, and it is "entirely" the consumers' responsibility what they choose to buy. "We are just the face of the brand but consumer is the king. They have to make their decision and know that it is entirely their responsibility what they choose to buy and invest their resources in," Kangana told IANS in a telephonic interview from Bengaluru.  The Central government could soon come up with a law that would make celebrities "accountable for misleading ads".
